So much of a pleasant visual composition comes from being at the right place at the right time. One can say the same about human connections. I make art to explore my connections with people in fleeting, inconspicuous spaces where relationships are made, celebrated and missed. From secluded rooftops to basements, I believe that beauty hides in places for those who have the courage to explore and the patience to appreciate.
My photographic style is influenced by colourful imageries from East Asian storytelling. I’m inspired by vivid characters from literary classes like Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber, to the cinematic depictions of emotions in Wong Kar Wai’s films. My photos are often shot in the dark, for it is in the darkness where humans reveal our best-kept stories.
As a lover of complexity, I get to know my subjects intimately before capturing their most vibrant moments. I live nomadically, my collaborators often become close friends in the cities in which I stay in. In my ongoing search for beautiful connections in elusive spaces, I hope to invite viewers to embrace their own emotional complexities and tell their personal stories.
